5 Things I Look for at Every Estate Sale
Estate sales are one of my favorite places to source, but they can be overwhelming if you don't know what to look for. After years of hitting sales across Texas and California, I've developed a system. Here are the five things I check first:
1. Lighting. Vintage lamps, pendants, and sconces are almost always underpriced at estate sales. Look for brass, ceramic, and blown glass. A good vintage lamp can transform a room for under $50.
2. Art. Original paintings, prints, and photographs are often tucked behind furniture or stacked in corners. I've found pieces worth thousands for under $50 simply because nobody took the time to look.
3. Ceramics and pottery. Hand-thrown pieces, studio pottery, and mid-century ceramics have incredible character. Check the bottom for maker's marks. You might be holding a Russel Wright or a Heath piece without knowing it.
4. Textiles. Vintage rugs, throws, and linens add instant warmth and character. Look for Turkish kilims, Pendleton blankets, and hand-embroidered linens.
5. Hardware and fixtures. Drawer pulls, door knobs, and cabinet hardware from the 1950s-70s are often solid brass and beautifully designed. They're an easy way to upgrade modern furniture.
The key is to arrive early, bring cash, and trust your eye. Not everything at an estate sale is a treasure, but the treasures are always there if you know where to look.
